DISTRICT INFO:
The Marengo Fire Protection District was founded in 1958.  MFPD covers an area
of  106 square miles which is the second largest district of the state, and
encompasses 17% of McHenry County.  The fire district boundaries include the City
of Marengo, which consists of only 4 square miles of the district, Riley Township,
and portions of Coral and Seneca Townships.

The city population in 2002 was 6,703 with a projection between 9,000 and
13,000 residents by 2010.  Marengo will also have great potential for growing both
residentially and commercially within this time frame.

A FIRE DOUBLES IN SIZE EVERY MINUTE:

The Overall Fire Picture - 2005
  • There were 3,675 civilians that lost their lives as the result of fire.
  • There were 17,925 civilian injuries that occurred as the result of fire.
  • There were 115 firefighters killed while on duty.
  • Fire killed more Americans than all natural disasters combined.
  • 83 percent of all civilian fire deaths occurred in residences.
  • 1.6 million fires were reported. Many others went unreported, causing
    additional injuries and property loss.
  • Direct property loss due to fires was estimated at $10.7 billion.
  • An estimated 31,500 intentionally set structure fires resulted in 315 civilian
    deaths.
  • Intentionally set structure fires resulted in an estimated $664 million in property
    damage.
U.S. Fire Administration - Winter Fires Life-Saving Tips

  • Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home. Test smoke alarm batteries every
    month and change them at least once a year. Consider installing a 10-year lithium
    battery-powered smoke alarm, which is sealed so it cannot be tampered with or
    opened.
  • Make sure wood stoves are properly installed, away from combustible surfaces, have
    the proper floor support and adequate ventilation. Never use flammable liquids (such
    as gasoline) to start or accelerate fire.
  • Make sure your space heaters have an emergency shut off in case they tip over.
    Kerosene heaters are not permitted in many areas. ONLY use the fuel recommended
    by the manufacturer. Never refill a space heater while it is operating or still hot.
    Refuel outside, away from the house.
  • Have your furnace and chimney professionally inspected annually and cleaned if
    necessary. Chimney tar build-up is a common cause of chimney fires.
  • Use a glass or metal screen in front of your fireplace to prevent sparks igniting nearby
    carpets or furniture.
  • Never thaw frozen pipes with a blow torch or other open flame. Use hot water or a UL
    listed device such as a hand-held dryer.
  • Dispose of hot ashes in metal containers placed away from the house.
  • Never use the range or oven to heat your home.
  • If there is a fire hydrant near your home, keep it clear of snow for easy access.
